Roller Skates

One distinct feature of a Roller Skate is the wheels attached below a pair of boots. The characteristic of the wheels plays an important role on the level of safety, the speed and the durability.

When purchasing the wheels, they come with a durometer rating. The common rating is from 74A being the soft wheel to 95A being the hard wheel. A softer wheel helps a skater to get a better grip on the road thus safer and also a more comfortable skating experience when going for a long distance. However a harder wheel is more durable and provides a faster speed which gives skaters the thrill and also ability to perform tricks such as grinding and sliding easier.

Just as the wheels are important, a skater must not forget the ball bearings inside the wheels that create the smooth spinning of the wheels. A well maintained wheel is useless with a non-functional and neglected ball bearing within. Skaters should avoid skating on wet surfaces as the bearings could turn rusty when come into contact with water. If the bearings do get wet, skaters could unscrew, wipe it dry and maintain it with some grease. There are also signs of replacement needed for the ball bearings. They are when the skating journey is not as smooth and quiet as the first few skating experience with new ball bearings.
